Number of criminal cases in Cape Verde increased by almost 32% in one year

 

The number of criminal cases filed by the Cape Verdean Public Ministry increased by 31.9% in the last year, to 28,882, more than half in Praia, with homicide crimes on the rise, according to the annual report on the situation of justice.

According to the document, concerning the judicial year 2021/2022 (August 1st to July 31st), prepared by the Superior Council of the Public Ministry (CSMP) and to which Lusa had access today, at national level, crimes against property increased by 55.6% compared to the previous year, to 14,436 (50% of cases filed), namely 6,053 complaints for theft, 3,468 for theft, 1,070 for damage and 3,392 for qualified theft, among others.

At the start of the current judicial year (2022/2023), 32,606 cases related to property crimes were pending across the country, a growth of 5.9% that coincides with an increase in crime in the country, especially in the city of Praia. .

According to the Public Ministry (MP) report, after the crimes against property, in the period from August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2022, crimes against physical and mental integrity followed (7,052 complaints filed in the last year, 12.1%), against the freedom of individuals (5,269, 8.2%) and against the family (2,344, 6.5%).

Overall, 62,759 cases carried over from the previous judicial year in the criminal area and 28,882 were filed in 2021/2022 — against the 21,901 filed in the same previous year, then the lowest value since at least 2014/2015 -, a period in which they were, on the other hand, On the other hand, 32,506 cases were resolved. Thus, a total of 59,135 cases were carried over to the new judicial year (2022/2023), a decrease of 5.8% compared to the previous year.

The Cape Verdean MP handled and processed in this way a total of 91,641 cases in the last year, still translating into a slight increase compared to 2020/2021.

The CSMP report adds that the number of criminal cases closed was 12.5% ​​higher than the number of cases entered and that “productivity increased by 15.8% compared to the 2020/2021 judicial year”.

“The Public Prosecutor's Office of the Comarca da Praia is the largest in the country and registered 56% of the cases entered at the national level, resolved 53% of the cases at the national level and corresponds to 73% of the cases that carried over at the national level to the judicial year 2022 /2023”, he adds.

The document also mentions that in the judicial year 2021/2022 “the total number of cases resolved was higher than the number of cases entered in 12 of the 16 prosecutors of the Republic”, attesting to the fulfillment of national goals to reduce the procedural pendency.

At the national level, the MP services received 406 cases for homicide crimes in the last year, against 259 in the previous period, but the report underlines that of these, 156 were “located following the physical count carried out which, despite being pending, were not accounted for in the system.

Of this total, 197 were attempted and a total of 371 were considered resolved (+51.4%), so that 1,024 pending cases referring to the crime of homicide, in the various forms, were transferred to the current judicial year (35 more one year).

Reported sexual crimes registered a decline in the last year, with the entry of 776 complaints in the MP, an increase of 68.3%, with 1,076 cases pending, at the national level, 2.1% more in the space of a year , with 754 cases resolved in this period.

New cases for drug crimes, on the other hand, increased 8.1% in the last year, to a total of 321, with 784 cases pending, an increase in pendency in this type of crimes of 3.4%, while 295 were resolved, also refers to the CSMP.
